Considering working in Christchurch New Zealand

11 months in Canterbury enough to refresh a mid-life career

Elaine Turner

An 11-month stint at the 24 Hour Surgery in Christchurch was enough to refresh this Scottish Medical Officer’s mid-life career and fulfil a life-long dream of visiting New Zealand.

“I came from Killin in Scotland with a population of 850 people and worked in a rural practice. I had always wanted to visit New Zealand and experience all I’d heard about – the outdoor lifestyle, the environment, ecology, landscape, weather and meet friendly Kiwis.”

Elaine worked at the centrally located 24 Hour Surgery, which she describes as “very well organised and designed to support clinical staff to do their job.” Another added bonus was working in a purpose-built facility alongside well-trained, helpful nurses and admin staff.

“I was particularly impressed with the good links with hospital staff and other GPs. This all worked together to provide an excellent opportunity to update and up-skill in acute medicine and minor to moderate trauma while I was here.”

“I found adjusting to ACC and its bureaucracy an interesting experience, but was equally impressed by the very positive attitude of patients who just want to get on with their lives.”
