A one-year working holiday has turned into a lifetime commitment for Welsh GP Simon Wynn-Thomas, who arrived in 1994 and hasn’t looked back.
“Travel for a doctor often means an overseas working holiday – New Zealand seemed like the perfect place. Its reputation for friendly people, breathtaking scenery and outdoor activities is legendary.” Simon’s first year was spent working at the Pegasus Health owned and operated 24 Hour Surgery as a Medical Officer. “It was a great place to get a grasp of the New Zealand health system, how general practice works here, and find out more about the country and people. That year long stint was also useful as a way to scope out and secure good locum jobs (essential to happy travels!) throughout the South Island.” “The lifestyle and scenery were everything they’re cracked up to be. There were some surprises, but I’m happy to say they were good ones. The health system in NZ has its problems like every other health system in the world, but it’s a lot more positive than the UK’s.” |
